Keynote

Rosie Batty AO

Rosie Batty AO knows pain no woman should have to suffer.  Her son was killed by his father whilst at cricket practice on 12th February, 2014.  An event that shocked not only the nation, but the world.  Rosie had suffered years of family violence and had intervention and custody orders in place in an effort to protect herself and her son.

The following day Rosie became an outspoken and dynamic crusader against domestic violence and less than a year later she was named Australian of the Year in January 2015. Since then Rosie has made the most of her position of influence, campaigning and advocating for systemic and attitudinal change, to address the scourge of family violence.

Before her shift to less public-facing advocacy work Rosie ran the Never Alone campaign through the Luke Batty Foundation, which she established in honour of her son.  With its 80,000 supporters, Never Alone led the push for a national change in conversation around family violence and helped put victims at the centre of policy decisions, ensuring their voices were respected and heard.  The campaign also helped influence key changes in the family law system and the introduction of respectful relationships education into the National Curriculum and Victorian state schools.

Rosie was the inaugural Chair of the Victorian Government’s Victim Survivor’s Advisory Council for 3 years, which was set up in response to the country’s first Royal Commission into Family Violence in 2016.

Fortune Magazine named Rosie as one of its top 50 world’s greatest leaders and was also voted the most influential person in the not-for-profit sector on Pro Bono Australia’s Impact 25 list in both 2015 and 2016.

She has been inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women, received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of the Sunshine Coast and in 2019 she also received an Order of Australia.

She is proudly a Patron for the Australian Childhood Foundation and Doncare Community Services, and is also a Board Director for The Royal Women’s Hospital.
